1B - P1B Kindergarten/1st
Instructor: Mrs. Harrison, Miss Shortman, Ms. Rogers, Miss Caldwell, Miss Hanahan
      Welcome to P1B!
On our team, Ms. Rogers teaches first grade and Mrs. Harrison teaches Kindergarten. In these standard/traditional classroom settings, students are placed in specific grade level groupings.  Students will have a different teacher each year and will follow the one-year curriculum for that grade level.
In Miss Shortman's, Miss Hanahan's, and Miss Caldwell's classes, the class population is evenly divided between Kindergarteners and first graders. Your child will spend both Kindergarten and first grade with the same teacher. These multi-age classes are set up on a two-year cycle for curriculum and for teaching strategies. Multi-age activities allow for individual levels and rates of progress.
When a child leaves first grade from a Primary 1 room, he or she has been exposed to all of the Kindergarten and first grade Standards of Learning.

Language Arts
In language arts, we are still working with reading groups and literacy centers. In reading groups, your child is working with a teacher and a small group of students on leveled readers. Reading groups also work on writing, comprehension skills, reading strategies, vocabulary, fluency, and oral language. Literacy centers are skill building work stations. Literacy centers are changed or modified regularly and may include big books, alphabet puzzles, listening centers with books on tape, handwriting, reading rods, sight word readers, and other fun activities that help the children learn.

Science and Social Studies
In Science, the students will work on discovering the properties of wood. They will investigate and explore these properties using their five senses. In Social Studies, the students will take some time to learn about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Benjamin Franklin and their contributions to society.

Math
During January, students will begin working on measurement. Students will learn about standard and nonstandard units of measure, as well as how to accurately measure objects. They will learn to compare the size or length of objects. They will also learn about measuring distance, telling time, and working with money.  In math workshops, student work together and play games to reinforce these skills.  To help with these skills at home, look around for anything to measure together- use rulers as well as nonstandard measures (paper clips, tiles, cubes, etc)!

Food Allergies
Please check with your child's teacher before sending food to school for birthdays or special occasions. We have students with food allergies who are very sensitive to even small traces of nuts, nut oils, eggs, and dairy products.  Your child's teacher can make suggestions for foods that are safe for all the students in the class to eat.
